A Spy Uncovered!

• Hei and Jam board the Ghtroc 720 light freighter called The Broken Crown. It seems safer to stay on the ship rather than in the barracks.
• Hei warms up the ship’s engines as a precaution in case the party needs to leave the planet quickly.
• Resolute Base Control contacts them asking why their ship is warming up.
• Jam explains that some maintenance needs to be done. Control is skeptical but allows them to continue provided they remember that they must seek clearance for this kind of thing in the future.
• Hei puts up his feet in the cockpit to go to sleep.
• Jam is bored, so he contacts Gara to see what she is up to. Jam learns that Gara is about to board The Dauntless to find out some news about the tibanna gas. Jam decides to join them.
• Hei asks Jam to take his electronet and set it up at the ship entrance to deter any intruders. Jam does this.
• Gara joins Captain Ruse and Lt. Narek as they heads towards The Dauntless to learn what the Verpine named Clik found. Jam catches up and boards the ship with them.
• Clik has discovered that 25% of the tibanna gas repulsor sleighs have fairly powerful tracking mechanisms in them.
• Further, the chemical composition of the tibanna gas is slightly off specifications.
• Gara looks at the chemical equation and posits that perhaps this change to the gas composition could cause an increase in turboblaster misfires after repeated use.
• Lt. Narek and Clik seem intrigued by this idea. Lt. Narek leaves to inform the commander and have this looked into further by Alliance scientists.
• Cypher and Von head to the control room to see if they can find clues in the Alliance databases about the black communication device and the mysterious glyph.
• After speaking with a guard and Major Yalor, Cypher and Von are allowed to proceed.
• Cypher reviews the base communications from the last week, but the amount of information is staggering, and Cypher becomes frustrated. However, he does come across an area of the database that lists the base personnel’s user IDs and whom the user IDs correspond to.
• Von researches the glyph and finds a couple of very obscure references. One details finding smashed and buried items with the same glyph on another remote planet. There is also an account of a spacer encountering some kind of a strange ship with a shape and hull type never seen before that is thought to be related to the glyph.
• Von decides to turn in for the night by returning to the barracks.
• Jam and Gara decide to turn in for the night.
• Hei is woken by someone trying to enter the ship. He hears a loud scream and jumps up to investigate. He finds Quado ensnared in the electronet jerking violently from the current.
• Hei switches off the net and speaks with Quado. Quado is very annoyed and somewhat injured. He can’t walk right.
• Quado points out that the ship is his, and he was just coming aboard to check on the ship.
• Hei suggests that Quado goes to the med bay. Quado indicates that he will once Hei gets off his ship.
• After Hei exits, Quado changes the security codes on the ship then limps off to the med bay.
• Hei decides to turn in for the night at the barracks.
• Cypher decides to stay up awhile and tries to reassemble the smashed black communications device. The device is too badly damaged to reassemble, but Cypher manages to repair and power up a portion of it and learns that it is definitely a powerful communications device of Imperial origin that sends information in bursts on a random on/off cycle then goes quiet.
• Cypher then turns in for the night.
• The next morning while the party eats their breakfast, Von is summoned to see the commander.
• Gara hands the data stick to Cypher, and Cypher works on slicing it.
• Von is escorted to a small room by a silver protocol droid. Inside, he is greeted by Commander Qurno, Lieutenant Narek, and Sergeant Haydon. Von notes that the two officers have blaster pistols on their hips, and the sergeant has a blaster rifle.
• Before the commander can start saying much, Von launches into his findings about the glyph. The commander paces back and forth listening and seems to be impatiently waiting for Von to finish.
• When Von is done talking about the glyph, the commander explains that he is very concerned about how the Cloud City operative was discovered by the Empire. That should not have been possible. The commander says that there is a missing piece to all of this somewhere. He then begins asking Von lots of questions about if there were any times when Von’s fellow party members were on their own for extended periods of time, taking strange holocalls, or acting strangely in any way. He then asks Von for his opinion of each of his fellow party members.
• Von admits that he is a new arrival to the group, but from what he has seen they all appear trustworthy and loyal to the Alliance.
• The commander thanks Von and asks him to send in Cypher next.
• Meanwhile, Cypher’s slicing into the data stick meets with some success. Unfortunately, a security key is needed to completely decrypt the data stick, but Cypher was able to determine the user ID of who downloaded the files. He was also able to decrypt one small piece of the data stick.
• Cypher relays to his fellow party members that he has come across a communication record sent offworld from Arda I inventorying the base’s assets, personnel, and overall readiness.
• When Cypher reports to the commander, he too is greeted by the same two officers and the sergeant—all armed. Cypher presents his findings from the data stick.
• The commander becomes highly agitated. This confirms that the base had or has one or more spies.
• The commander then begins asking the same questions that he asked Von. Cypher responds that he never got a good read on Huan because he was so private, but he has confidence in the other party members. Jam seems a little foolish and unconventional in his methods.
• The commander asks Cypher to send in Hei next.
• Cypher gives Hei a heads up as to what to expect in the meeting with the commander.
• Hei shows up to the meeting with a chip on his shoulder. He is offended by the distrust, and he answers the questions curtly. Hei speaks highly of his fellow party members. He singles out Gara as being a dedicated doctor that has patched him up on a number of occasions. He owns up to his uncle playing a negative role in the Cloud City business.
• The commander asks Hei to send in Jam next.
• Jam answers the commander’s questions in detail, extolling eloquently the virtues of his fellow party members.
• Sergeant Haydon points out the obvious that Gara is female, so the sergeant imagines that there were times when Gara was apart from her male colleagues to use the refresher and change clothes. The sergeant asks if there was ever a time when Gara was away for an extended period of time or acted strangely.
• Jam responds that he doesn’t recall a time that she was away from the other party members for an extended time or acting strangely. He remarks that she can be a little superior and impatient with her male colleagues, particularly with Jam, but her heart is in the right place, and her skills as a physician are much appreciated.
• The commander seems satisfied with Jam’s answers and prepares to dismiss Jam, but Jam requests the he speak with the commander alone for a few minutes.
• The commander acquiesces, and he motions for Sergeant Haydon and Lieutenant Narek to wait outside in the hallway.
• Jam begins relaying details of Narek’s suspicious behavior and convinces the commander to question Narek seriously. The commander offers Jam to witness the questioning if he likes, but Jam seems uncomfortable with that.
• The commander tells Jam to go into the hallway and tell Narek to come it, but Narek is not in the hallway.
• Jam asks the sergeant where Narek went. The sergeant says Narek needed to fetch something from the command control room and left a couple of minutes ago.
• Commander Qurno orders Sergeant Haydon to go find Lt. Narek. He also asks Jam to tell Gara to report to him.
• The commander questions Gara as he did the rest of the party. He also questions why Gara didn’t bring the data stick to him last night or have it decrypted last night.
• Gara responds that she wanted to make sure the box was opened under controlled conditions and wasn’t booby-trapped. She then wanted to have Cypher slice into it, and it was late last night when that was a possibility.
• The commander seems satisfied with Gara’s answers.
• When Narek isn’t located quickly, the commander puts the base on high alert to have everyone looking for him. Sirens blare throughout the base.
• Gara asks the commander what the rules of engagement are on Narek. The commander wants him alive for questioning if at all possible.
• The party learns that from the commander that he had some of the base personnel assigned to watch the party members due to the mystery of how the Empire found out about Quado on Cloud City.
• Hei and Von join the search for Narek. They decide to go to the motor pool and make sure that all of the vehicles are accounted for.
• Shortly thereafter, there’s commotion on the tarmac where the space ships are. A personal transport vehicle lifts off into the sky and zooms into the atmosphere.
• Pilots start running towards their ships. A couple of X-Wings and a Y-Wing take off in pursuit.
• Cypher is in the control room with Jam and they hear how the pursuit of Narek is playing out. The ships fire on the fleeing ship and miss. A missile is launched, but then the ship jumps into hyperspace and is gone.
• The commander seems confident that Narek will be found soon, but some of the party members are pessimistic about that and suggest that perhaps the base should be evacuated. The commander nods and says he will think that over.
• The commander wants the party members to continue their investigation out beyond the boulder in the direction west where the creature was running to.
• Some of the party confer among themselves and think the mission is foolish or perhaps suspicious since a spy was just uncovered and fled the system and a base evacuation may be necessary.
• The party decides to follow the commander’s orders, but they want to stop by the quartermaster’s first to get some supplies.
• Recalling being wounded yesterday, Hei is interested in getting some better armor. Quartermaster Tal Mer seems reluctant.
• Jam offers to buy Hei some armor from the quartermaster, but after some further talking and the quartermaster confirming that the commander ordered this mission, the quartermaster goes into the back and brings out a suit of padded armor for Hei to wear free of charge.
• The party heads out on the speeder bikes. They drive more slowly this time, and Jam seems to be getting the hang of steering his bike.
• After a while they reach the boulder and go beyond, heading towards the rocky mountainous region to the west.
• As the terrain begins to turn from flat jungle and swamp to slopping hills, Gara spots something white in some dense foliage and motions for Hei to stop.
• Gara finds a cluster of Kelda lilies that can be used to extract anti-venom.
• The party also spots nearby an area where it looks like something was buried.
• They dig it up and find an Alliance blaster that has been savagely smashed into pieces. Gara decides that it should be bagged and brought back to base.
• Von finds some tracks that belong he thinks to one of the strange creatures and has the party slowly follow the tracks on the speeder bikes.
• Eventually the terrain becomes too rocky and elevated to safely use the speeder bikes, so the party dismounts and continues on foot ascending towards a cave opening that can be seen in the distance.
• The way up to the cave is somewhat treacherous, but no one loses their footing.
• As they grow nearer the cave entrance, Von gets out his scanner googles and magnifies in on the cave mouth. He thinks he spots some movement inside.
• There’s some debate in the party if they should try to approach the cave entrance in a roundabout way or make use of the more direct route that would use a nearby plateau. The party decides to use the more direct approach.
• As the party nears the cave entrance, they notice that the terrain in this area looks odd. Lots of crushed rocks for example. Also, the cave entrance looks a little strange.
• Getting a little closer to the cave entrance, some movement can be seen in the cave shadows.
